Charles Dunbar

Painting

Chuck Dunbar, born in Cleveland, Ohio, received his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from the Ohio State University. After working as a chemist for several years, he turned to art, a lifetime avocation since early grade school. He studied art at Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana. After receiving a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he and his wife, Cathy, started an art supply store in New Orleans. They sold their store in 1994 and moved to Albuquerque in 1995.

Over the years, Chuck has participated in over one hundred competitive exhibitions throughout the country, often winning prizes. In 2006, the Mid Region Council of Governments in New Mexico awarded Chuck the contract to create fifty-four images that were etched on glass windbreaks for the New Mexico Rail Runner passenger stations.

Chuck's paintings often bring a smile to viewers. However, beneath their lyrical surface lies a world that is often dark and even threatening. This conflict creates an image that keeps viewers smiling, uncertain and uneasy. Since moving to New Mexico, Chuck has created his version of retablo paintings complete with an altar screen and his take on New Mexico’s sun baked, thorny, mountainous landscape. He has created a series of paintings of female types in the spirit of Nineteenth Century Japanese artists, a series of visceral paintings depicting a child’s view of anatomy and paintings showing the secret lives of machines.
